The History of the Bungalow:
The restoration movement over the past two decades has embraced all styles of older homes. The Bungalow, however is considered by national housing experts as
the most treasured of all older homes, primarily because of its charm and unique architectural features. During the 1920's and 30's, the Bungalow was indeed America's
favorite house. Many national companies, including Sears Roebuck & Co. sold plans and even pre-cut kit houses. In many areas of the country, entire neighborhoods were
Bungalow designs, yet each had a uniqueness and special character all its own. Nationwide, Bungalow neighborhoods have become veritable hotbeds of restoration fever.
The most well-known example of this is an area in Pasadena, California designated as the "Bungalow Heaven Landmark District." It has served as a model for architectural
style and detail for similar neighborhoods, new and old, across the country. Around the turn of the century, Bungalows became associated with the Arts & Crafts Movement.
It was an idea that centered on the idea of preserving traditions of handcraftsmanship, in the wake of the Industrial Revolution. The public feared at that time that
handmade goods, especially items used to build and equip homes, would eliminate the hand-crafted quality and feel of a new home. This worry fueled an entire movement with
a passion for many years. Trend-setting California was the leader in the Arts & Crafts Movement, which romanticized the Bungalow. A cult-like following developed over the
years. On the west coast today, Bungalow neighborhoods generally sell homes for triple the cost per square foot of other homes. The well-planned designs of these homes
have helped to make them so popular. Their compactness was liberated by generous outdoor living spaces, such as large front porches, and built-in furniture. Although its
promoters seemed to promise too much for a mere house to deliver, the Bungalow delivered on most claims rather well. Today's Bungalow designs by Preservation Homes are the
result of years of research and design. We not only have worked to duplicate the original concept, but we feel that we have also improved it, implementing features and
meeting needs for the families of the 21st Century. Our plans offer modern considerations such as spacious kitchens, luxury baths, and sensible room dimensions, yet still
retain the charm of the homes built almost a century ago.
